The Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) was founded in 1969. It is an international nonprofit organization that serves as the primary organization of jewelers and metal artists in North America.
SNAG is responsible for several major projects which contribute to the field: the publication of Metalsmith and Metalsmith Tech magazines and an annual Jewelry and Metals Survey, an annual conference, exhibitions, lectures, professional development, and a website. All of these resources and events combine to document the work in the fields of jewelry, design, and metal arts; advancing jewelry and metalsmithing by inspiring creativity, encouraging education, and fostering community.
Article: THRIVE: an expo in designing nature and growing technology
Publication: NEXT NATURE
Date: 2022-04-08
NEXT NATURE (HQ: Eindhoven, the Netherlands) is an international nature organization for anyone interested in the debate on our future – where biology and technology appear to be merging or even trading places.
We must no longer see ourselves as the anti-natural species that merely threatens and eliminates nature, but rather as catalysts of evolution. With our urge to design our environment we create a ‘next nature’ which is unpredictable as ever: wild software, genetic surprises, autonomous machinery and splendidly beautiful black flowers. Nature changes along with us!
Preserving nature is of great importance, but we must also dare to look ahead. Will we grow meat without slaughtering animals? Embrace the robot as a colleague? Earn ECO coins for sustainable actions? Will men have babies one day? We want to go forward – not back – to nature.

What is the concept behind LAByrinth? What is LAByrinth’s mission?
LAByrinth is the manifestation of my interests in the facts and fantasies that fuel life. I’ve always been interested in things like the different ways in which creatures “see,” animal behaviors and evolution, attempted explanations for how our minds work and why we dream, and science’s latest postulation as to “why we are who we are.” What is disconcerting now is that “who we are” is being challenged by a small group of people with very specialized knowledge who are making big decisions and claims that will affect everyone. From food to healthcare, the environment and birth, biotechnology has the potential to alter who we are at the molecular level, and there are no guarantees as to what may or may not happen. So LAByrinth is my way of reminding people to not take those things that we can and cannot see (for whatever reason) for granted, by allowing them to “wear the wonders of the invisible world.” Hopefully these items will act as reminders and also spark conversations on these issues.
